If you ask any makeup lover the cult lipsticks that are essential for their makeup stash, chances are you’ll hear Ruby Woo from MAC a lot. It is that one ravishing red lipstick that suits every skin tone and looks beautiful on every woman/ person.
Since,I want to say, two years back, there have been speculations that a certain Indian brand (Ahem ahem Lakme) has a dupe for Ruby Woo; And that sounds like great news since Lakme 9 to 5 lipsticks are under 500 bucks compared to INR 1495 as MAC prices it’s lipsticks in India.
I own both of these lipsticks and I’ve had them for a REALLY long time, so I think I’m kind of fit to be a judge for if the 9 to 5 is a dupe of Ruby woo, or NAW! 😛
Well, unfortunately, its not! They do look really similar in swatches and pictures and you might even be fooled if you were shown swatches and asked to guess. But once you put them on, you’d know! That is because Ruby woo has blue undertones and Red Coat has yellow undertones. Ruby woo stands out on your complexion, not in a garish, siren-y way but subtly whereas Red Coat appears deeper and mellower on yellow skin tones that most Indians have. Red Coat blends with the yellow tones of the skin and it doesn’t have even a hint of blue.

Also, Red Coat is a matte lipstick but it doesn’t feel as dry as Ruby Woo. It is much more comfortable and wearable but that also means that Ruby Woo lasts longer.
All in all, Red Coat is a lovely warm tone red that will suit all Indian skin tones but sadly, it is not a dupe for Ruby Woo.
Your best bet can be a deep but bright blue tone red lipstick like:
Revlon Colorburst Matte Lip Balm in Striking – INR 899
Sugar Cosmetics Matte As Hell Lip Pencil in Scarlet O Hara – INR 799
Please let me know in the comments below if you know any other dupe!
Until next time, lovelies, stay beautiful! :*
